From a letter to Elizabeth Bowen (12 January 1936):
Thanks ever so much for sending the flowers which are in a great bunch in front of me. But I wish I could have seen you, lovely as pink and yellow tulips are. I had a little influenza, which landed me in the usual cursed headache, so that I am kept in bed. But I am much better today and able to dip into about 20 different books, a thimblefull at a time between draughts of sleep. This is my usual method of recovery. (The Letters [Vol. 6], pg. 4)
